*** Onslow County Schools is moving to a 1:1 Technology Initiative in which all 2014-15 7th, 8th and 9th graders will receive a new Dell Latitude 3340 laptop (http://goo.glM1EIB8), with a $25.00 Insurance Assessment. The request for the padded backpack and or sleeve is for the protection on the device.

Onslow County Schools makes every effort to provide its students access to a variety of technological resources that provide opportunities to enhance learning and improve communication within the school community and with the larger global community. Through the school system’s technological resources, students can observe events as they occur around the world, interact with others on a variety of subjects, and acquire access to current and in-depth information. Therefore during the 2014-2015, all 7th, 8th and 9th grade students will receive a Dell 3340 Laptop for the purpose of student instruction (a $25.00 Insurance Assessment is applied).

Onslow County School’s 1:1 Initiative (one laptop, one student) affords students equitable access to hardware, software, and network resources. In this initiative, students are assigned a laptop that provides wireless access to the internet and campus resources along with software, support, and maintenance. The laptop assigned to each student is the property of Onslow County Schools and is for student use during the school year and they are expected to bring it to school daily. The meaningful use of this technology in the course of study and educational activities is digital citizenship.

Digital citizenship is the norms of appropriate, responsible technology use. A digital citizen is a person who uses digital tools such as computers and mobile devices to interact with others, for example, sending SMS and email, posting pictures to social networking sites and participating in blogs and online discussions. It is important because digital citizenship is the concept of using technology responsibly and not misusing it to the disadvantage of others. As we spend more time online, it is vital to understand how to stay safe online. QA student/parent contract will be distributed at the time of deployment. Additional cost incurred will include the need of a padded backpack or laptop sleeve to ensure safety of the device.
