Good Afternoon Parents, students, and staff,

This is Joycelyn Cassidy, Principal of HCMS, calling with the TAPPN report for 2/12/18 to 2/23/18. Anything in this report is also posted on the website.

A revised OC School calendar has been posted on the HCMS and the OC website. The previously scheduled Early Release Days of 2/15 and 3/15 are now full student days.

A shout out to the students that competed in the Regional Science Fair yesterday at UNCW. We are really proud of their representation of HCMS. Our own Gabriel D with his submission titled “This Is Rocket Science” received 2nd place in the Middle School Physics Category and will be eligible to move to the State Level that will be held at NC State in March. Way to go Gabe!!

Congratulations go to the Girls basketball team. They valiantly made it through the first round of the middle school tournament last Thursday. In a “down to the minute buzzer”, the girls pulled off a great win against SBMS. On Saturday, they competed against JCMS and gave a great fight for the 2nd round.

We have five students that participated in the All County Chorus concert yesterday at NSH. They were Julie S, Nyasia S, Serenity H, David M, Karley L. The entire concert was a wonderful way to showcase talent and collaboration in the arts.

Volleyball and Soccer tryouts are going to start on Monday February 12th. Students must have a physical and concussion form on file, meet the academic and attendance eligibility as well as their parent have attended the required parent meeting in order to stay for tryouts. Tryouts for each sport end at 4:00 and rides must be on time. Soccer participants must be dressed appropriately and should/need to bring a water bottle.

Preseason workouts for this year’s baseball season will begin February 20th from 2:30-4:00. A sign-up sheet will be posted outside of the gym doors for students interested in participating. Any student who plans on signing up MUST have an up to date physical on file, transportation, and have attended an athletic parent meeting. More workout dates will also be posted outside of the gym. PE shirts for second semester are still available to purchase for $8.00. Just pay your homeroom teacher.

The National Junior Honor Society is running our Pasta for Pennies Campaign to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Donations will be collected every Friday. The homeroom that collects the most money will receive a recognition lunch from Olive Garden. The Campaign runs from February 5-23rd. Check out the website for more information and ways to donate electronically.

Stride is a running program for boys in 6th-8th grade. Meetings start February 26th and will occur twice a week until the end event, a 5k on May 12th. Registration closes February 15th. If your son is interested he can see Mrs. Gamber or Ms. Hines for information.

The second semester box top competition has begun. Please send in box tops to your child's homeroom teacher. The class that turns in the most box tops for February will win a prize!

With news from the military front, there is an Art and Essay contest for military children. Students whose parents are active duty are invited to participate. Information and permission slips have been sent home. Information is also posted in Guidance Corner on the website. This contest is via the Armed Services YMCA. The Art contest is open for grades 1-6 and the essay contest is open for grades 1-12.

Yearbook and yearbook ads are still available to purchase. Please see Ms. Larimore or Ms. Cunningham.

The 8th grade EOY dance is scheduled for Friday June 2nd. Partial information regarding the dance was sent home with students December 18. If you have questions, check with one of your child’s 8th grade teachers.

Mark Your Calendar:


· Chess club meeting scheduled for Monday, 2:15-3:30. Rides need to be on time.

· Battle of the Books competition is scheduled for Thur, 2/22/18 at SWHS. Good luck to the HCMS team.

· Schoolwide spelling bee is scheduled also on Thur 2/22 at 6:00 PM in the HCMS Media Center. Please come out to support out A+ spellers.

· We have a Black History Presentation scheduled from 5:30-7:00 on Monday, 2/26. Please come out to see the students’ products as we recognize significant historical events.


And finally, parents, this is a friendly reminder about school lunch charges. Charges can be cleared online with a debit card or through the café. We greatly appreciate all your assistance to the important matter.
